Tutorial: How to Partition your External Hard Disk




Since I need to polish my English writing skills, so I decided to write this tutorial in English. Correct me if I'm wrong. And ask me in details if you need some guidelines :) Btw, why partitioning your external hard disk? Some of the reasons are to ensure your files are arranged neatly and tidy. To separate between important data and unimportant data. Another reason is to separate the system apps (this refer to windows hdd) and another data (like music, document and etc).

  1. First of all, you need to attach your external hdd to your computer.

       2. Click ‘start’ menu and right click to computer --) select ‘manage’ to open computer management windows --) enter.

      3. The ‘computer management’ windows will be display. Then Click ‘Disk management.’

      4. So that the Disk Management Programs will come up. 

      5. Select the external disk drive under Volume. Right click on external hdd that you want to do the partition. Then select delete volume. (if your external hdd is in ‘primary partition’ format)

6.  After deleted, the blue region (primary partition will be automatically changed into black region (unallocated) as shown as the picture below.

7. After that, just right click on black region, then select ‘New simple volume’. So, that the warning dialog box will be automatically shown as picture below. (Partitioning hard drives with existing data results in permanent data loss. If you have data or programs on the external hard drive, back up the drive first before you partition it.)

8. After that, the dialog box ‘Welcome to the new simple volume wizard’ will be shown.  Just click next to proceed


    9. Enter a size for the new partition. The default value is the full capacity of the external hard drive. Choose a smaller size than the default if you intend to create multiple partitions on the drive and then click "Next."

10. Assign a drive letter for the new partition. Then, Click "Next" to continue

11. Select a file system format. These include NTFS, exFAT, FAT, FAT32 or GPT, with the default being NTFS. ‘You can choose whether to set an allocation size, assign a label or name to the new volume or whether to enable compression or you can proceed without changing anything’. After that, Click "Next."  


12.  Just click "Finish" to complete the disk setup. The external hdd will be automatically formatted and will takes some times to be done. Close the computer management windows once the format is finished. Now your external hdd will be ready to use! ..

Note:
1.   Use step 1 until step 12 for assign the first partition and then step 7 until step 12 for the 2nd partition (on the same external hdd).

2.  To rename the partition, just go to computer --> select the partition--> right Click --> rename.
